SUMMARY:Archaeology of domestic life in Polynesia’s first Catholic kingdo
 m: Mangareva Islands\, French Polynesia 1830-1900
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Vortrag auf Einladung des AK Mittelalter:&nbsp\;In 1834\, Frenc
h Catholic priests and lay brothers from the order of Sacrés\nCœurs de J
ésus et Marie arrived in the Mangareva islands\, a remote\narchipelago lo
cated about 1600km southeast of Tahiti\, to establish the first\npermanent
mission in the region\, small stone cottages to replace the traditional\n
buildings of wood and thatch. This talk focuses on the results of excavati
ons\ncarried out in 2023-2024 that documented many of the remaining buildi
 ngs\nincluding schools\, churches\, a cathedral\, ‘are po‘atu and othe
r structures. In\naddition to recording building techniques\, which used m
aterials and methods\nimported from Europe but adapted to the local enviro
nment\, the excavations\nrecovered a sample of material culture that refle
ct the increasingly globalised\neconomy of Polynesia over the course of th
 e 19th and 20th centuries.\n\nZugangsdaten: \nhttps://univienna.zoom.us/j/
