SUMMARY:Roderick Salisbury: Soil chemistry in archaeology (Vortrag AK Neoli
 thikum / Bronzezeit)
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:\n\nSoil chemistry is especially useful in archaeology because
it reveals parts of the archaeological record that are difficult to identi
fy and interpret through excavation or geophysical prospection methods. Fo
r example\, manured fields or areas used for cleaning and butchering fish
and animals might only be revealed through chemical methods. Soil chemis
try is used for several purposes in archaeology: site prospection\, inves
tigating settlement patterning\, analysis and interpretation of archaeolog
ical features\, and reconstructing activity areas and soilscapes. For the
se purposes\, field methods can be roughly divided into two groups: prospe
ction survey and feature analyses. In survey\, samples are taken at regula
r intervals\, and this can be done at many different spatial scales. Surve
y work is not dependent on known site boundaries. For feature analysis\, s
amples or in situ measurements are taken from known contexts\, generally d
 uring excavation.\n\n
